I DETEST that it takes about two SECONDS for a story about a Pit Bull or a Rottweiler biting a small child to cause outrage and mass hysteria and cries of “Kill the dogs!”, but then you get a story with some actual common sense in it and no one bats an eye.

Owners, Not Pit Bulls, Are The Problem

Though the majority of pit bulls today are no longer being purposefully bred along fighting lines, pit bulls still can be dog aggressive (as are many other types of dogs). How that plays out will vary from pit to pit, and the dogs need a smart owner to keep them in line. Dog aggression can be managed by getting a pit into a training program that offers structured, controlled socialization, says Mary Harwelik, a certified dog trainer and founder of The Real Pit Bull, a pit advocacy and education organization in New Jersey.

Pits are also among the most human-friendly canines. In tests conducted by the American Temperament Test Society, which evaluates stability, friendliness, and other traits in several hundred dog breeds, the American pit-bull terrier scored 85.3 percent, higher than a golden retriever. Their human-friendly nature remains strong even in horrific circumstances. “I thought I was going to meet a bunch of Tasmanian devils,” says Dr. Frank MacMillan, a veterinarian with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary who is working with some 20 pit bulls rescued from Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels. “I was stunned at how sweet they were.”

That inherent sweetness toward people can lead well-meaning humans to be too permissive with their precious pooches. Because of its tendencies toward dog-on-dog aggression, Torres advises pit owners to keep their dogs out of mosh-pit, free-for-all dog parks. “Not a lot of pit owners want to hear that,” says Torres. “If there’s a fight, no matter what dog started it, the pit will be blamed.”

Yes, I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but this reflects my view exactly.

My cousin Jessica left a comment on yesterday’s post to which I started writing a novel of a reply, so I decided to make it into a blog post.

Jess says: “Wait!!! Your saying that the 1st time EVER that you voted it was now! For a guy that we already knew was going to win?”

Honestly? I didn’t already know he was going to win. I hoped he would, but it’s a difficult hope to nourish when you’re a blue dot in a red state. Maybe I would have had more confidence if I still lived in Maryland, but I live in Arkansas, I’m surrounded by the Christian Right Wing. After I voted yesterday, I was driving to work and I passed a woman holding a sign that said “Vote for the Bible, not Obama!” I could go on and on about separation of church and state and the fact that religious leaders belong in churches, not the Oval Office, but that’s another post, I think, and I’m not in the mood to offend anyone.

Well, let me correct that – I’m not in the mood to offend anyone else. About ten years ago, I started hanging out in chats and on message boards on AOL, and became part of a small circle of people who began meeting each other offline and creating private message boards and such like that. One particular member of the group is someone I have twice met offline and was one of the stops I made on my road trip this summer. On our group’s message board, we’ve been discussing politics and the election, and this one group member got so upset by the two of us who declared we were voting for Obama that she decided to leave the board for a little while. She said that she hated Obama and was upset that we were acting as though Obama was a God and could do no wrong, never acknowledging that she treated McCain-Palin in the same manner of which we were accused. As of this past Monday, she has decided to leave the board permanently – why, I do not know. She won’t answer emails or return phone calls. From the information I have come across, nothing bad has happened in her life offline, so I’m drawn to the conclusion that she’s left because of the politics discussions.

What do people see in Barack Obama? Go read this really wonderful post by Cleolinda. It’s not that he’s black, it’s not that he’s a Democrat, it’s not that he’s young, or cute, or might look good in a swimsuit. It’s that he makes people want to be better, he makes people remember that this country is better. His election has caused celebrations around the globe, not just in our own neighborhoods, for crying out loud, when’s the last time that happened? Time will tell whether he amounts to more than just wonderful speeches, but at least people are willing to give him the chance.
