I miss pretty

Friday, October 27, 2006

Seriously? WHAT is going on in the fashion industry lately? Everything’s ugly! And WHY is the ugly stuff so popular?

I’ve been shopping around for a nice, classic, cute – not something my grandma would carry –  simple, affordable, not-too-big red leather handbag. I cannot find one. Ebay has failed me, for the first time ever. Everything I find is the size of a suitcase, or scrunchy, or furry, or fringed, or studded, or ugly in a million other ways. I’ve never thought that I’m hard to please. I don’t care whether or not something is designer - except for jeans, because let’s face it, finding flattering jeans is the most troublesome shopping experience I have ever had, therefore nothing comes between me and my Calvins - so my options are not really limited. I have a huge list of favorites in a folder entitled “Shopping,” so why is it so damn difficult to find something I like these days?

The same with shoes. Now granted, Victoria’s Secret is all about what is blatantly and stereotypically sexy, and I almost never buy shoes from them because I have no need for stilletos. (Also, Victoria and I sometimes have differing views about what ”sexy” really means.) The one pair of shoes I do recall buying from them was a pair of Skechers tennis shoes. However, VS has really upped the skank factor on their shoe offerings this season. They had some cute stuff happening in the shoe department over the summer, but then fall came, delivering their shoe catalogue into my mailbox, and I was briefly under the impression that it was something to do with Halloween costumes. Victoria seems to think that her main customers are $2 hookers and other similar hoochies, and not afraid to show it. Fat furry moonboots, jewel studded boots that are better off returned to 1989, glitter encrusted platforms, and other horrifying exhibits of The Fug.

Guess I won’t be adding anything new to my closet anytime soon.
